Billy Elliot
Billy Elliot the Musical has reached the same level of success as the film did. The musical has received four Laurence Olivier Awards and was nominated for a further five awards. The book and the film, both written by Lee Hall, provided the basis for the script. It was then set to musical written by Sir Elton John, ingredients for a hit West End show!
The plot revolved around a young boy desperately wanting to take ballet lessons after stumbling across a talent for the art during a missed boxing lesson. Billy’s deception of his new hobby adds humour and emotion to the show. The musical also addresses key issues of this period in the eighties including the miners strike that effected northern communities such as Billy’s. Issues of social disorder and poverty are also addressed in the musical which further adds to the intensity and emotion of this compelling performance.
Homosexuality is another theme that is approached in this tough British drama. The story of a young boy with an exceptional talent striving for success in the masculine and harsh world that is the reality of Billy Elliot’s world makes for an exceptional evening at the theatre with laughs and tears guaranteed!
