Grease
The modern love story of Sandy and Danny as told in Grease has become timeless. The story deals with class conflicts as we experience the lives of children from a working class background. The musical, first shown in 1971, deals with a variety of issues facing the changing culture of the 1950s and 1960s. The culture of America was changing drastically as Rock and Roll and a sexual revolution spread across America.
Within the musical Danny symbolises the 1960s with a relaxed sexual outlook with sex at drive ins and a gang culture whereas Sandy represents the more reserved and sexually moral 1950s. The two characters fall in love and a relationship attempts to blossom within the confusion of their lifestyles and the conflicts of high school that confront them.
The musical addresses the dangers of this changing culture with teenage pregnancy and violence. These issues and stories are portrayed through moving songs such as There are Worse Things I could do. The musical is one of Broadways and the West End’s longest running shows and continues to draw audiences to night after night. The West End is currently showing Grease in Piccadilly Theatre and cheap tickets to Grease are more widely available.
