Phantom of the Opera
In 1988 Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on London’s West End. The Phantom of the Opera is the most financially successful musical of all time. The release of a film version and the sheer quantity of shows performed internationally has made Phantom of the Opera the highest grossing entertainment event in history. As well as this, the musical holds the title of the second longest running musical in the history of the West End and the longest running musical on Broadway.
The musical is still performing night after night to full audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Haymarket, London. The musical is based on the French novelist Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel Le Fantome de l’Opera. The story tells the tale of a deformed ghostly figure that haunts the theatre. His deformity sends him into hiding and he hides his face behind a mask. However, one of the girls working at the theatre becomes the girl of his dreams. The feelings he has for her are not returned and the phantom of the opera vows to take revenge over his humiliation and rejection. The enchanting musical includes hit songs such as “The Phantom of the Opera” and “The music of the night”.
